•Common Tones in Simple Time, John Adams
•Violin Concerto*, Edgar Meyer
•Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral), Ludwig van Beethoven

We continue our journey through Beethoven’s symphonies with one of his most beautiful — a musical outing to the countryside. Composed during the same time period Beethoven created his fifth symphony, it was inspired by the frequent walks through the countryside surrounding Vienna.

Here the Pastoral is joined by more contemporary pieces that echo between Beethoven’s pastoral themes and American folklore. Adams has called his first orchestral piece “pastoral with a pulse;” Meyer’s concerto recalls his Appalachian Journey work with Yo-Yo Ma.

* Angela Fuller, Violin
